Our Story

A Quiet Beginning
16 May 1996.
Not a red-letter day. Not a date that made headlines.
But on that quiet day, a small flame of compassion was lit — and a safe space was created for those in emotional pain to speak freely, without fear or judgement.
That was the day Lifeline Foundation was born.
Founded by the late Mr Ravinder Singh, Lifeline was envisioned as a free, confidential, and anonymous emotional support service — available to anyone feeling overwhelmed by life.

His belief was simple yet profound:

Sometimes, the act of truly listening can be enough to save a life.
Listening Can Save Lives
Today, that belief drives everything we do.
Based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, Lifeline Foundation is a registered non-profit organization offering free emotional support through our telephone helplines — open every single day, to anyone who needs to talk.

At the heart of our work are our volunteers — rigorously trained and deeply empathetic individuals who give their time and heart to listen, support, and hold space for others.
Their one unwavering purpose:
That no life be lost to suicide.

Local heart, Global Outlook

We are proud to be members of Befrienders Worldwide, a UK-based charity overseeing a network of over 90 emotional support centres across 48 countries.

In India, we are part of the Befrienders Initiative, alongside 14 other centres and nearly 350 trained volunteers. We also share common cause with global partners such as the Samaritans (UK) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (USA).
